The simple present tense

The simple present tense is verb tense which is used to show repetition, habits, and schedule. sometimes we use it for near-future sentences.

Let’s start with an example,

•  I like cricket.

The simple present tense is just based form of the verb. For third-person singular form (he, she, it),  we add -s ores.

For question sentences,

use ‘does’ for ( he, she,it) and

‘do’ for ( I, we, you, they).

For example,

• he likes cricket.

• does he play football?

• she likes cricket.

How to use -s or -es after the verb?

If the form ends with the letters  S, Z, sh, CH, and X ; add -Es

i.e.,  class-classes, lunch-lunches, match-matches

For singular verb and plural noun add -s to the simple form

i.e., drive-drives, drink-drinks

Other verb rules

if the sentence form ends with ‘Y’, change ‘Y’ into ‘I’ and add -es

for example,

            cry-cries ,try-tries

If the sentence form ends with F or Fe change the F or Fe to V and add -es

i.e., knife-knives, calf-calves

let’s see some examples

  • he plays football.
  • does she like tea?
  • she likes tea.
  • they enjoy a film.
  • sunita works as a doctor.
  • raj cries like a baby.
  • does raj work as a doctor?
  • do I watch a cartoon or a movie?

when we use (am, is, are) as the main verb, there is no need to follow simple present tense rules.

i.e., I am a boy.

he is a boy.

we are a team.

Let’s learn about negative sentences. In simple present tense, negative sentences made with do not ( I, we, you, they) or does not ( he, she, it).

FOR EXAMPLE,

  • she does not like coffee.
  • I do not want to go Canada.
  • he does not even know about it.
  • the car does not work properly.

but with am, is, are, ; we just use not

i.e.,

  • I am not a tall boy.
  • you are not a good man.
  • she is not a fat girl.

where we can use The simple present tense ?

1. for daily things:

2. general things:

  • why does not she join us?
  • we meet every Sunday.
  • I do not drive a truck.
  • why are you so beautiful?

3. for future:

only a few verbs are used in this way :

be, start, begin, end, open, close, finish, come, return, leave and arrive
